Unit III was one of the first landfills to come on line in Kentucky to meet the July 1, 1995 deadline imposed by the State. Unit IV, Bavarian's current cell, is designed to be constructed in six phases. Unit IV is a contained landfill that meets or exceeds Subtitle D requirements for landfills, allowing Bavarian to accept limited quantity generator hazardous waste. However, Bavarian has elected to forgo this source of revenue due to our concern for the environment.
Unit IV has a liner system that includes a layer of engineered re compacted clay that exceeds 1x10-7 permeability, a manmade bentonite layer, a manmade 60 mil synthetic layer, a geo-net and/or gravel drainage layer, and filter fabric that serves the leach ate collection system--consisting of SDR17 piping and collection tanks, and finally, a "cushion" layer of material to protect the synthetic liner. The site also has surface and ground water monitoring, methane monitoring (and collection upon closure). The cap will consist of the 72" contained cap, and the site will be monitored for a minimum of thirty years after closure. Unit IV has a capacity of 17,000,000 cubic yards of air space.
